Dear Friends,

As I prepare to step down from the helm of SPME and pass on the baton of leadership to the very capable Prof. Peter Haas at Case Western Reserve University, I want to thank all of you who have contributed since 2002, especially in the early years. How far we've come and how we've proven ourselves to naysayers who were skeptical about our ability to endure. Yet, how much work we still have to do in order to provide our disciplines and campuses with the information needed to reverse the ever-rising academic threats to academic integrity and honest debate.

Thank you for making it possible for a handful of volunteer professors to publish two academic books with another in preparation; to grow to an organization of over 30,000 academics engaging, educating and empowering professors to address issues of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism on campus and have acted to stop boycotts of Israel scholars proposed in North America, the UK and in Europe. SPME has done so much, but there is so much more to do.

Many of you asked us to teleconference our important Iran conference and we couldn't because we didn't have the resources. Some of you have wanted to participate in our highly competitive and successful Faculty Fellowship to Israel Summer Program, but we could not offer that last year and this year due to lack of funds. Others of you have important academic projects to help improve and clarify the complexities of the Middle East and we are held back in granting awards because we simply don't have it.

Public Television sometimes points out that if everyone watching made a contribution, they might not have to ask again for a long time. Well SPME is the same. If everyone reading and responding to this solicitation gave just $75.00 ( a mailing list of over 30,000,) we'd not bother you again for at least two, if not three years for contributions. Your contribution would make SPME the most powerful academic voice on campus. The best part of it is that your contributions would make us completely academically independent and able to really represent the "big tent" philosophy for which we strive as scholars. We budget for about $500,000 a year, have raised less than $200,000 the past few years with the knowledge that if everyone paid $75.00, we'd raise $2,250,000, enough to fund scholarship, research, conferences, fellowships, programs, chapter development for three or more years. Those of you receiving this letter for your academic year, tax deductable year end contribution have it within your power to determine whether this work gets done or not.

If SPME is to remain a truly independent international community of scholars it will require each of you making a yearly contribution. SPME believes we can show the world that scholars not only have the will to address these important issues and change the narrative against Israel and Jews on campuses, not just by lending our names to petitions, but by supporting one another through an academically oriented network of scholars developing important scholarship with academic integrity.

Below are a list of colleagues on campus and in the community to whom we give our thanks for their support this year and last. The list is growing, but if your name is not on it, we'd be honored to add it or offer you as an anonymous contributor if you so desire. The important thing is that you contribute annually. You may have lent your name to a petition or become involved with us through meeting some of us or a recommendation of a friend. Now, as colleagues and friends, we are asking you to make a substantive commitment to help perpetuate our mission and our network. Thanks to many of you we are growing.

As I leave office, I will share with you my guiding thoughts about leadership and participation from the important Taoist philosopher, Lao Tzu:

" A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. "

Yet to be totally honest with all of you, one of my greatest disappointments after co-founding SPME in 2002 and being it's president through the end of this year is not engaging more of you to contribute something to support the good work or our colleagues through this organization.

If you have appreciated anything we've done or thought, "what a good job they are doing and how wonderful it is to have this network," please give and give generously. There's a very simple principle operating here. The more who give and the more that's given, the less we have to ask.

There are three easy ways, including one new way with a new credit card capability.

1) Go to www.spme.net/donation.html where you can contribute through the very secure PayPal

2) For those of you not who are unable or unwilling to use PayPal with your credit card, please contact Elizabeth Gaither, SPME's Administrative Assistant at adminasst@spme.net to give her your credit information. She can make arrangements to take your credit information over the phone, by fax until we eventually have a link to the website. This is a new option for those living in countries where it is difficult to give through PayPal and for those not wanting to register with PayPal.

3) You can simply send a check, made payable to SPME and send to SPME, c/o Susquehanna Institute, 624 Sandra Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17109-5816 USA.

Please support our important work. Equally important, please get involved and show Prof. Haas and the new leadership of SPME and our colleagues around the world that when our work is done, we can say we did it ourselves.
